Haidee (19th century) - Haidée by Guerlain takes its name from a Romantic-era heroine who captured the European imagination in the 19th century. The character first appeared in Lord Byron’s Don Juan (1819–1824) as a Greek maiden, celebrated for her beauty, innocence, and tragic love. Her name soon resonated across the arts, inspiring Daniel Auber’s opera Haydée, ou Le secret (1847), which further popularized the figure in French culture. Hyemalis Anthelia (1848) – Extrait d’Hyemalis Anthelia was part of Guerlain’s “Essence du Jardin d’Hiver” collection, where each fragrance highlighted a single botanical note. The name combines “Hyemalis”, a Latin-derived term meaning “wintry” or “of winter,” with “Anthelia”, from the Greek anti (“against”) and helios (“sun”), suggesting resilience or radiance during the cold season. The fragrance likely drew inspiration from winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis), a small European buttercup known for its bright yellow flowers that bloom in late winter or early spring, often through snow. The Latin term hyemalis reflects the plant’s winter-flowering habit, while “Anthelia” poetically evokes its sun-like blossoms. As with other fragrances in the collection, it was presented as a blended bouquet with a Latin or pseudo-Latin name, reflecting 19th-century tastes for classical, scholarly, and exotic associations. Housed in the elegant Carré flacon, the fragrance has since been discontinued (exact date unknown) and exemplifies Guerlain’s early mastery of botanical-inspired perfumery, celebrated at events such as the Universal Exposition.

Hymenaea Nitida (1848) - Extrait d'Hymenaea Nitida was part of Guerlain’s “Essence du Jardin d’Hiver” collection, in which each fragrance celebrated a single botanical note. The perfume drew its name from Hymenaea, a genus of tropical American timber trees in the Leguminosae family, characterized by glossy leaves and large white or purplish flowers. Like other fragrances in the collection, it was part of a refined blended bouquet with a Latin or pseudo-Latin name, reflecting the 19th-century penchant for classical and scholarly references. Housed in the elegant Carré flacon, the fragrance competed at prestigious events such as the Universal Exposition. It has since been discontinued (exact date unknown). Still being sold in 1872.

Kadine (1911) – Kadine – Historical Background – Gabriel Guerlain created Kadine for Princess Marie Louise of Bourbon-Parma (1870–1899), Princess consort of Bulgaria, who had a passion for perfumes. From her gardens, she distilled what Gabriel Guerlain noted no Parisian perfumer could obtain unadulterated: the true, concentrated essence of Bulgarian roses. Parma violets, developed by her family, yielded nearly their exact fragrance. Above all, she adored iris. While orris powder from the root was widely known, no perfumer had succeeded in producing what Marie Louise envisioned—a concentrated liquid iris that was neither insipid nor one-dimensional, but enriched with “fugitive half-tones and a tantalizing suspicion of orange for dissonance.” Gabriel Guerlain, whom she called her friend, composed this exquisite perfume for her under the name Kadine. In the Ottoman Empire, Kadine means a woman in the Sultan’s harem who was elevated to the status of a wife, that is, a favorite. The fragrance was presented in the Carre flacon (parfum), and also in a ½ litre Quadrilobe bottle (parfum) in a black wooden box made by Baccarat, as well as in the Goutte flacon (eau de toilette). Discontinued (date unknown) but still sold in 1956.

Algeria was  a French colony at the time, having been under French rule since 1830. The perfume is classified as a floral oriental fragrance for women.

Kriss (1942) – Created by Jacques Guerlain. The fragrance was originally commissioned by the Nazis as “an original perfume to the glory of their army” and named after the kris, a dagger with a wavy blade from Southeast Asia, which was standard issue for SS members. According to research by Will Inrig from Osmothèque, rumors of Jacques Guerlain being a Nazi collaborator circulated as the war ended, and Kriss was quickly withdrawn from the market. Guerlain also noted that its short lifespan may have been due to wartime scarcity of raw materials. The perfume was relaunched in 1945 under the name Dawamesk, with the original formula unchanged. It was presented in the Quadrilobe flacon (parfum) and the Noeud Papillon flacon (parfum) and was still sold until 1945. Le 68 Cologne Fond de Cuve (2013) Nicknamed “The 68, Guerlain Tank Base,” this creation revives a little-known house tradition dating back to 1828. Each year, Guerlain would collect the residues—fond de cuve—from all the perfumes produced or tested, blending them into a unique “generic Guerlain.” With a dash of citrus added, this became a light cologne, gifted by the liter to employees at year’s end. While modern regulations prevent recreating the practice exactly, master perfumer Thierry Wasser reimagined the concept, crafting a refined and sparkling cologne sold exclusively at Guerlain’s flagship, 68 Champs-Élysées. Offered in generous liter bottles, it recalls the generous spirit of the past—meant to be splashed freely, even in the bath. A playful nod to heritage, humor, and Guerlain’s unmistakable signature.
